Tarragona, Spain – September 30, 2024 – The Sescelades Campus of Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) hosted the kick-off meeting of the HydroCool project, a 36-month initiative bringing together six international partners from four countries to advance sustainable cooling technologies. The project addresses critical challenges in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The HydroCool project introduces a cooling system that uses hydraulic compression and expansion of CO₂ to enhance efficiency and reliability while reducing costs and carbon emissions. This innovative solution aims to meet the rising demand for cooling without increasing energy consumption or exacerbating global warming.
The initiative is supported by a consortium of leading academic and industrial partners including Universitat Rovira i Virgili as coordinators, Storage Drop Israel Ltd., Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Université Clermont Auvergne, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Aristeng SARL, and Inveniam Group. Each partner contributes specialized expertise, essential for overcoming the current limitations of CO₂-based systems such as high operational pressures and limited geographical applicability due to CO₂’s low critical temperature.
Key discussions during the event focused on benchmarking HydroCool‘s technology against industry standards to ensure its scalability and impact across diverse applications, such as data centers, urban cooling systems, and the food industry. The consortium also emphasized the importance of affordability, reliability, and lifecycle environmental assessments to demonstrate the viability of the new cooling system.
Participants toured URV’s facilities, visiting laboratories and observing equipment that will support the project’s research and development. The demonstrations provided an overview of the infrastructure essential to HydroCool‘s innovation.
